Several studies have explored the impact of sleep deprivation on overall health, as
well as the relationship between sleep and skin ageing. This research suggests that sleep deprivation effects on
skin include accelerating visible signs of skin ageing, including wrinkles and dullness, due to disrupted cellular
repair processes and reduced collagen production.
These are common skin concerns that are exacerbated by sleep deprivation:
Fine lines and loss of elasticity
Sleep
deprivation’s effects on skin can include impaired skin hydration, barrier function, and elasticity by
disrupting collagen synthesis—a key process that maintains the skin’s structure and resilience. Over
time, this can contribute to the appearance of fine lines and reduced firmness.
Dull dehydrated skin
Poor sleep weakens the skin barrier, reducing its ability to retain moisture and
protect against external stressors. This weakened barrier leads to increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL),
resulting in dehydration, dryness, and lackluster skin.
Puffiness & dark circles
The connection between dark circles and sleep is well-established. When the sleep
cycle is interrupted, blood circulation is impaired. This reduces blood flow and causes fluid retention in the face
and eyes causing puffiness and pooling of blood under the eyes resulting in a darkened appearance commonly known as
eye bags or dark circles.
